Belarus suggests new ways to reduce radioactive contamination of forests

MINSK, 23 August (BelTA) – Belarus is ready to make its contribution to the development of international cooperation against radioactive contamination of forests. The country also intends to trigger a joint research of forest ecosystems given radioactive contamination. The relevant initiative will be suggested by Forestry Minister of Belarus Mikhail Amelyanovich at the 11th session of the CIS Interstate Council of Forestry, Spokeswoman for the Forestry Ministry Ruzhena Novitskaya told BelTA. The session timed to the CIS’ 20th anniversary will take place in Astana, the capital of Kazakhstan, on 24-26 August.

Belarus’ representative is expected to inform the CIS member states on Belarus’ contribution to the implementation of the agreement on cooperation in forestry and set out Belarus’ position on the draft international ministerial agreements included into the agenda of the session. Mikhail Amelyanovich will also update the meeting participants on forestry development in Belarus and the country’s experience in dealing with wildfires and environmental problems.

According to radiation monitoring, the area of polluted forests in Belarus is annually contracted by 2.6% on the average.

Research into Chernobyl issues is carried out nonstop both within the state programs and joint programs of Belarus-Russia Union State. Regulations on forest management in the zones of radioactive contamination have been developed over the last two years. So have been the control regulations on radioactive contamination as well as four technical codes on radiological monitoring.

Radioactive contamination of forests remains the burning issue for Belarus, Russia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan and other CIS states. Belarus suggests new areas of cooperation on this and other environmental issues. According to Belarusian experts, it is of high importance to share experience in forestry activities on lands contaminated by radioactive materials, regulations on forestry activities and production of eco-friendly forest products, radiation safety rules.

Research and practice seminars on the control of radioactive contamination of forest resources, radiation monitoring, its data storage and classification as well as application of GIS technologies are valuable for the CIS interested ministries. Sharing experience in the implementation of a strategy of communication concerning radioactive contamination of forests is of great value as well. It includes public information on forest access restrictions, a level of pollution in forest products, game and technical raw materials.

Belarus suggests a constant exchange of information in preventing forest pest, disease and wildfire spreading as well as of the results of national research in radioactive contamination of forests.

Apart from the session of the CIS Interstate Council of Forestry, the Belarusian delegation is expected to hold several bilateral meetings. In particular, the Forestry Ministry of Belarus and the committee of forestry and game husbandry of the Forestry Ministry of Kazakhstan are to sign a protocol of intentions on cooperation in the forestry sector.
