A few duty-free shops may be opened at Belarusian border

MINSK, 6 September (BelTA) – A few duty-free shops may be opened at motorway and railway border checkpoints of the Belarusian border. Every one of them will be decided upon individually. Transparent operation is a must, said President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko at the government session held on 6 September to discuss the operation of Belarusian duty-free shops.

According to the press service of the Belarusian head of state, Alexander Lukashenko has not been convinced that it is necessary to resume the operation of duty-free shops at motorway and railway border checkpoints on a large scale.

“I am not prepared to make the decision whether we need specific shops at the border. Those, who are involved in retail trade there, hoping that we will reopen these shops, do so in vain. If we have to open any, it will be pinpoint decisions with specific people held responsible to meet strict obligations,” said the head of state.

The President remarked it was not important whether a government agency or a private business would run such a shop.

Alexander Lukashenko stressed complete confidence was needed that it would generate maximum profits for all industries and the country as a whole.

Alexander Lukashenko tasked Head of the Belarus President Property Management Directorate Nikolai Korbut, Chairman of the State Customs Committee Alexander Shpilevsky, and Chairman of the State Border Committee Igor Rachkovsky to make pinpoint decisions on opening such shops, bearing state interests in mind. According to the President, the government will be the body to regulate their operation.
