Gazprom: Ukraine, Gazprom to continue talks

The CEO at Russian gas giant Gazprom Alexei Miller and Ukraine's Energy and Coal Industry Minister Yuriy Boiko have had another round of talks, Gazprom reported.

"The meeting took place in constructive circumstances. The parties agreed to continue consultations and negotiations on cooperation in the sphere of gas in accordance with agreement reached between the two countries' leaders at the end of 2011," a Gazprom press release says.

Kyiv is demanding that Gazprom revise the price and the contracts completed in 2009 with the previous Ukrainian government.

Ukraine considers the price to be too high and has therefore sharply cut its selection of Russian gas without Gazprom's written agreement.

Gazprom has not hidden its desire to take possession of Ukraine's gas transport system and has designated it as a condition for lowering the gas price for Ukraine - something that has already occurred in Belarus.

At the end of December, another meeting was held between Russian President Dmitry Medvedev and Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych.

No concrete information was announced after the meeting, except that the two presidents had agreed to provide guidance to their governments on completing work related to cooperation in the gas sphere.
