MOGILEV, 20 March (BelTA) – Mogilev Oblast and Henan Province (China) intend to boost economic cooperation. The agreement was reached at a meeting of Vice Governor of Mogilev Oblast Viktor Nekrashevich and the Chinese delegation led by Deputy Director of the Standing Committee of the Henan Provincial People's Congress Wang Wenchao, BelTA has learnt.
Mogilev Oblast and Henan Province established cooperation in November 2003 when the Chinese delegation paid the first visit to the region. The two sides focused on development of relations in education and culture. Chinese partners learnt about Belarus’ potential. Mogilev residents learnt about culture and traditions of China.
“Now we are eager to fill up our relations with an economic constituent. We have proposed China a number of investment projects in extraction of commercial minerals, agricultural production, and industry. In particular, we asked our Chinese partners to help us with the development of the bergmeal deposit in Khotimsk District,” Viktor Nekrashevich told reporters while summing up the talks.
In turn, Wang Wenchao expressed interest in developing comprehensive cooperation with Mogilev Oblast. “We have a great potential for the development of mutually beneficial cooperation, which could be translated into various projects in the economy, agriculture, alternative energy, and in education, medicine, culture,” he said.
To speed up the process of economic cooperation, Wang Wenchao offered to organize several joint meetings between businessmen in the province of Henan and Mogilev Oblast.
The Chinese delegation has also met with Mogilev MPs to study the potential of the Mogilev free economic zone.
In 2011 Mogilev Oblast exported $3.1 million worth of products to China, 70.5% as against 2010. Import from China increased almost fourfold to $261.3 million. Belarus’ main exports to China were tires (over $2.4 million), hackle ($444,000) and complex artificial fibers ($168,000). Belarus imported Chinese technological equipment (50% of the total), products of chemical industry (15%) and electric engines (about 10%), pumps, fabric, iron products, electric installations and footwear.
