Public prosecutor in trial of Ales Byalyatski appointed deputy head of Minsk branch of Investigation Committee

Valery Vakulchyk, head of the recently established Investigation Committee of Belarus, has appointed Valery Saykowski, who was the public prosecutor in the trial of human rights defender Ales Byalyatski, to serve as deputy head of the Committee’s Minsk city branch.

Prior to the appointment, Mr. Saykowski headed the department for supervision over adherence to tax and customs laws at the Minsk City Prosecutor’s Office.

On December 16, 2011, Mr. Saykowski was added to the European Union’s list of Belarusians subject to travel bans and asset freezes for his role in the trial of Mr. Byalyatski.

On November 24, 2011, a judge of the Pershamayski District Court sentenced Mr. Byalyatski, chairman of a human rights organization called Vyasna and vice president of the International Federation for Human Rights, to four and a half years in prison on a charge of large-scale tax evasion.
