European Parliament disappointed by execution in Belarus

MOSCOW (Interfax) - The European Parliament has expressed regret over the execution of terrorists in Belarus and that Russia cannot duly influence President Alexander Lukashenko.

At a press conference at Interfax the European Parliament's rapporteur on Russia and leader of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats' faction Hannes Swoboda conveyed his personal and shared disappointment, saying that Russia, regrettably, does not act like the European Union's partner, as it is not trying to influence Lukashenko into opting for a more democratic conduct.

The recent execution following debatable court procedures is particularly disappointing, he said.

Swoboda said if Lukashenko does not change his ways, he would urge the European ice hockey teams to boycott the games in Belarus.
Europe should send a very strong and energetic signal to Belarus, he said.

The government of Belarus confirmed that the two men convicted of carrying out a deadly subway bombing in Minsk last year were executed on March 17.
