Union State MPs: Russia’s presidential election is democratic and legitimate

MOSCOW, 5 March (BelTA) – Observers of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union State of Belarus and Russia recognized the presidential election in Russia held on 4 March as open, democratic and legitimate, BelTA learnt from the press service of the assembly.

The delegation of the Parliamentary Assembly was part of the CIS observers’ mission and consisted of 24 MPs. It was headed by Chairman of the Permanent Commission for Economy, Budget and Finances of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of Belarus, member of the Union State Parliamentary Assembly Vadim Popov.

The members of the Parliamentary Assembly visited 135 polling stations in 11 regions of Russia: Moscow and the oblast, Rostov, Smolensk, Bryansk, Kaliningrad, Nizhny Novgorod, Pskov, Tver and Yaroslavl oblasts and Krasnodar Krai.

The observers from the Parliamentary Assembly attended the opening of the polling stations, their closing and voice count. All the polling stations and voting premises were equipped with all the necessary equipment to conduct the voting process. The observers pointed to the use of advanced high tech solutions at the polling stations, availability of ballot processing systems and cameras for Internet broadcasting, which were used at the Russian election for the first time. The monitoring team pointed to some minor technicalities that were not observed, but were rare and could not distort the voting results.

According to the observers, the voting process was in compliance with the electoral law of the Russian Federation.
