Belarus applies to IMF for financial support, Chris Jarvis says

MINSK, 5 March (BelTA) - Belarus applied to the IMF for financial support, said Chief of the IMF mission in Belarus Chris Jarvis on 5 March after the mission’s work in Belarus was completed.

“We discussed the request from the Republic of Belarus for financial support to the IMF,” said Chris Jarvis. Negotiations on the program would require the consent of all government bodies, including at the highest level. "A comprehensive and consistent package of measures will need to be adopted to restore the stability. Serious structural reforms will need to be launched,” said Chris Jarvis. He added that the IMF also needs to be sure that the new program will be supported by the member states.

“We cannot try to predict today what will influence the decision and behavior of the IMF member states,” he said. “The IMF is ready to support the Government and the National Bank of Belarus in developing reliable and well-founded policies that could be supported by the IMF member states. Once the IMF sees that there are good prospects, it will be ready to provide its full support to the program in Belarus. Consultations with the IMF member states on their support to the program will be possible then, Chris Jarvis said.
